"Nautilus Story"
by Cayanna Cedrone Colonel Ledyard School: 2nd Grade
When I got the phone call that said you won the contest you’re invited on the U. S. S. Nautilus, I was shocked. I was the first kid to set sail on a submarine. When the day came I woke up bright and early. My mom brought me to the sub. When I stepped foot on the ladder I was nervous, but when the captain Hyman G. Rickover said “welcome aboard Mate,” I felt okay. The first thing I did was take a tour of the sub. I saw the crews corner, the Engine room, the Reactor room, the Attack center, the Bridge, the periscope room and so many more rooms. When I learned to use sonar I heard the sound that meant we were going to set sail. Quickly I got ready to start but when the captain said “Not yet we have to get to 75 feet underwater.” He said “when we submerge you can use the sonar, but for now we use the periscope depth.” Finally the sonar started to work. We were deep enough. I heard a sound. It was a ship from Japan, but they aren’t our enemies. Luckily we didn’t have to fire any torpedos. I went to my other station the control room. I grabbed that wheel. I started to drive, but then I started to turn on the air so we could surface. When we were back home I told my mom all about my day. The end.
